Young Hearts at Risk: A Nursing Perspective on Trends, Determinants, and Preventive Cardiovascular Care
1.0 contact hour – August 27, 2026 – August 31, 2028
Nurses require targeted education on cardiovascular disease in young adults because cardiovascular risk often begins well before middle age, yet early symptoms, risk factors, and prevention opportunities may be overlooked in this population. Because many young adults have fewer routine health care visits after leaving pediatric care, the goal of this activity is to improve nursing knowledge which can support timely identification of high-risk patients, reduce missed opportunities for prevention, promote patient engagement in lifestyle changes, and improve referral or follow-up for evidence-based management.
Session Objectives:
- Describe current trends in cardiovascular disease (CVD) among young adults.
- Identify key determinants of early cardiovascular disease, including behavioral, biological, psychosocial, and social factors.
- Recognize early clinical indicators and risk factors for CVD in young adults.
- Apply evidence-based strategies for early detection and risk assessment.
- Integrate preventive cardiovascular care approaches into nursing practice.
- Examine health equity considerations and disparities influencing cardiovascular risk.
- Develop actionable nursing interventions to reduce long-term cardiovascular risk.
- Evaluate the role of interdisciplinary collaboration in prevention and management.
Successful completion of learning activity:
Participants who view the module in its entirety, pass the post-test with 80% or higher and complete the evaluation form, will receive an electronic certificate via email. RNs completing the activity will receive a 1.0 contact hour of continuing education.
The Michigan Nurses Association (MNA) is accredited as a provider of nursing continuing professional development by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation.
