Resilience in Care: Strategies for Suicide Prevention

1.5 contact hours – June 2, 2026 – June 30, 2028

Nurses may face a higher risk of suicidal thoughts or suicide attempts because of burnout, heavy workloads, job-related trauma, mental health stigma, depression, substance use, and easy access to medications. Supportive workplaces, strong social connections, resilience, and access to mental health care can help reduce that risk. Healthcare organizations can also help by improving mental health support, reducing stigma, and creating healthier work environments. This professional development activity will help nurses and other healthcare workers recognize warning signs and respond supportively to reduce the risk of self-harm among coworkers.

Objectives:

  • Participants will be able to describe the scope and drivers of suicide risk among healthcare workers.
  • Participants will be able to recognize warnings signs and intervene in a supportive way with peers who are at risk for self-harm.
  • Select and practice two resilience skills that can be used at work to reduce burnout and improve resilience.

 Successful completion of learning activity:

Participants who view the module in its entirety, pass the post-test with 80% or higher and complete the evaluation form, will receive an electronic certificate via email. RNs completing the activity will receive a 1.5 contact hours of continuing education.

The Michigan Nurses Association (MNA) is accredited as a provider of nursing continuing professional development by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation.
