Human Trafficking: What Nurses Need to Know

2.0 contact hours – May 21, 2026 – May 31, 2028

Human trafficking happens in different forms and respondents need to stay abreast with current victim presentations in order to respond effectively.  While studies indicate that up to 88% of human trafficking victims seek health care services while in captivity, less than half the respondents (42%) have received formal training in human trafficking, while an overwhelming majority (93%) believe they would benefit by such training, (Exeni McAmis NE, Mirabella AC, McCarthy EM, Cama CA, Fogarasi MC, et al. 2022). This professional development activity will provide nurses and other health care professionals strategies for identifying common clinical signs and behavioral cues linked to individuals seeking care in different healthcare settings.

Session Objectives:

  • Identify common clinical signs and behavioral cues linked to trafficked individuals seeking healthcare.
  • Describe the neurobiological impacts of trauma and their importance for patient care and communication.
  • Implement trauma-informed care principles when engaging with individuals who are currently or have been trafficked.
  • Exhibit appropriate multidisciplinary and referral responses to suspected human trafficking cases within their clinical setting.

 Successful completion of learning activity:

Participants who view the module in its entirety, pass the post-test with 80% or higher and complete the evaluation form, will receive an electronic certificate via email. RNs completing the activity will receive a 2.0 contact hours of continuing education.

The Michigan Nurses Association (MNA) is accredited as a provider of nursing continuing professional development by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation.
