Understanding Disparities in Alzheimer’s & Other Dementias

Health disparities can have a profound, negative effect on entire populations or individual communities. Dementia care and support services can vary widely depending on race, ethnicity, geography, and social and economic factors. Stigma, cultural differences, awareness, and understanding about Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias can all be factors leading to health disparities. People of color face discrimination when seeking healthcare which can lead to disparities in the care received by this population and can increase negative patient care outcomes. Nurses are other healthcare providers need to be aware of discriminatory language and practice to provide optimal care to all patients.
Session objectives:
- Describe Alzheimer’s- related health disparities impacting African American and Latino people
- Explain the mental health implications of Alzheimer's Disease and Dementia.
- Recognize risk factors for Alzheimer's
- Identify risk reduction strategies for Alzheimer’s
Successful completion of learning activity:
Participants who view this presentation in its entirety, complete the evaluation form, and pass the post-test with 80% or higher, will receive an electronic certificate via email. RNs completing the activity will receive 1.0 contact hour of continuing education.
