MNA Legislative Update 04-23-12
Community tries to save Cheboygan Memorial; where are the politicians?
Today the Cheboygan community is holding a rally to generate support for re-opening Cheboygan Memorial Hospital, which closed April 3rd. MNA has been working closely with the administration for months to try to protect health care in the community.
Meanwhile, Congressman Dan Benishek has done little (if anything) to prevent the loss of the county’s only hospital or to help restore health care.
MNA renews its call for Dr. Benishek to hold a town hall meeting in Cheboygan to explain his involvement in the closure of CMH and what he is doing now to protect health care in the community.
Call Dr. Benishek’s office at (231) 348-0657 and demand that he hold a town hall in Cheboygan to give citizens the information they need!
Victory! Insurance companies must now pay for autism treatment
After years of fighting alongside other health care professionals, MNA was proud to celebrate a great moment for Michigan families last week when legislation requiring insurance companies to pay for autism treatment was signed into law. This rare piece of good news coming out of Lansing shows that our voices do make a difference.
Protecting our voice, one signature at a time
The “Protect Our Jobs” campaign addresses the most important issue Michigan workers will face in our lifetime: whether collective bargaining survives in our state. Hundreds of thousands of workers have united to protect our basic collective bargaining rights – which are under constant attack by Lansing politicians and CEOs – by adding them to the state Constitution.
How can you help? Two ways: 1. Help gather signatures needed to put the issue on the ballot in November and 2. Talk to everyone you know about why collective bargaining matters and what we need to do to protect it.
Have questions or want to help gather signatures? Contact Julia Smith-Heck at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Safe Patient Care Act in the spotlight
State Rep. Jon Switalski, sponsor of Safe Patient Care legislation and the recipient of MNA’s “Friend of Nursing” Award, was on the Tony Trupiano Show last week raising awareness of the Legislature’s need to support nurses. You can listen to the interview or download it here. We continue to push for action at the Capitol and tell politicians to put patients, not profits, first.
Speak up for cleaner air
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is proposing the first ever national carbon pollution standards for new power plants, and they need to hear from nurses like you who care about public health! Please join our friends at the American Lung Association and tell the EPA we want the strongest possible safeguards to reduce lung disease and save lives.
